About the Program

PURPOSE:
The Region III Adult Literacy Center, funded by the Florida Department of Education, assists in enhancing, improving and expanding adult education/literacy programs and services for under-educated and/or educationally disadvantaged adults ages 16 and over.

NEED:
In this 12 county region, there are 2,104,200 residents age 16 and older according to the last census figures. This population experiences an average of 20% of the targeted individuals reading at or below the National Institute for Literacy’s definition of functional literacy – 6th grade reading level. They need the services of Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Adult Credit and GED preparation programs to acquire the knowledge and skills to compete in a global economy and to exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and make healthy lifelong decisions.
In addition, this region continues to experience a significant rate of international migration. While the increase of population due to immigration varies, county-by-county, the need for English language literacy is significant throughout the region.

SERVICES OFFERED:
Coordination and communication among community based organizations.
Conduct public awareness campaigns.
Recruit adult learners.
Recruit and train literacy volunteers.
